Ever since grapes were first grown at Mission San Luis Obispo and San Miguel in about 1804, vineyards formed an important part of San Luis Obispo County. North County around Paso Robles is the fastest growing wine growing region in California and one of the largest at 41,000 acres. The county has 16 American Viticultural Areas. Many of the vineyards are open to the public and offer wine tasting and sales.
