North County around Paso Robles is the fastest growing wine growing region in California and one of the largest at 41,000 acres. The county has 16 American Viticultural Areas. Many of the vineyards are open to the public and offer wine tasting and sales. One has a tour by train ride.

Traveling north on California Highway 1 about fifteen and a half miles, brings us to Morro Bay with the westernmost of a string of extinct volcanoes, Morro Rock, overshadows the bay. North of Morro Bay are the Cayucos Pier, the seaside community of Cambria, and the Hearst Castle and Piedras Blancas elephant seal colony.

If outdoor adventures are your thing there are several locations that might interest you west of the convention hotel. At the Los Osos Oaks State Reserve you will find an oak forest with a hiking trail. A few more mile will get you to the El Moro Elfin Forest – a pygmy oak forest overlooking Morro Bay, or to Spooners Cove – a beautiful cove visible from the bluffs trail.

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden displays Mediterranean climate plants from California, South Africa, Australia and around the Mediterranean Sea.

Built in 1853 and a California Historical Landmark. The adobe is surrounded by a garden.
Also in the gardens is the Romona Depot, Built in 1883 to serve the Romona Hotel on the north side of San Luis Obispo. In the outdoor section is a horse drawn street car that was used on the San Luis Obispo Street Railway between 1887 and 1901.

Avila Beach lies eight and a half miles south of San Luis Obispo. Almost a brand new community after being rebuilt as a result of mitigation and removal of a massive oil spill, the quaint shops and bay side promenade give Avila Beach a special appeal. To get an even better view of the bay, take a walk out the Avila pier. Also in town is the small Central Coast Aquarium.

Located in downtown San Luis Obispo on the east side of Higuera Street next to Nick the Greek restaurant, this is one of the weirdest places in town. Gum coats both walls of this narrow, 15-foot high and 70-foot long alley. Started over 70 years ago, you can add your own gum to the wall if you dare. Not recommended to visit after dark.
